Artist Biography

Born in Seoul, South Korea, Ji Yeon “Hanna” Ryu's journey took an international turn when she moved to Beijing, China, at just 6 months old. Her exposure to diverse cultures from an early age laid the foundation for her unique artistic perspective. She pursued her artistic education in the United States, achieving a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Following her academic achievements, Hanna returned to her hometown of Seoul, where she has resided for the past 5 years.
Artist Statement
Hanna's artistic path has been a meandering exploration of identity and self-expression. Despite anticipating that settling into a familiar environment would provide ample time for artistic endeavors, it took her 5 years to fully immerse herself in her creative journey. Hanna's work is centered around the intricate interplay of self-discovery and connection with nature. Her canvas becomes a reflection of moments when she has felt both adrift and anchored, lost and found.
Beyond her artistic endeavors, Hanna's passion for teaching and education led her to pursue a Master's in Art Education at Seoul National University. This decision marked a significant shift, as it was her first formal education experience in Korea. Having taught in an English-speaking school in Korea, she recognized the power of art as a universal language that transcends cultural and linguistic boundaries. Her commitment to fostering creativity and self-expression in students spurred her to delve into the theoretical underpinnings of art education.
Hanna's journey as an artist and educator has propelled her to explore the rich tapestry of her multicultural experiences. Through her artworks, she invites you to join her in navigating the threads of identity, each brushstroke a vibrant stitch in the canvas of her narrative.
